I have always been fascinated by the gentlemen drivers: wealthy sport personalities that in the search of pure enjoyment and fun, risked their lives in each race, due to the lack of modern security resources for mechanics and circuits.
Between 1937 and 1941, every gentlemen driver who didn’t want to be out of the game, barely had any other choice: to race with one of the four hundred sixty two BMW 128 that were built (a similar case to the Porche 911 in the seventies). The most remarkable aspect of this model was the rear part casted in aluminium (first time ever this material was used in a series car). Its motor of 1.971 c.c., 6 cylinders in line and 80 CV, made it possible to accelerate from 0 to 100 Km/h in just twelve seconds. Quite impressive by present standards, let alone back then.
