The Ferrari 315/ 335 S was the weapon introduced by the italian brand for the edition of the celebrated Mille Miglia in 1957. Derived of the 290 S, both models were aesthetically identical, except for the motor capacity (3.783 cc y 360 cv for the 315 S and 4.023 cc y 390 cv for the 335 S).
That year a hard confrontation was expected from the strong 4500 cc Maseratis. That’s why Maranello’s brand showed up at the start line with a powerful army of four teams: De Portago- Nelson (nº 531), Von Trips (nº 532), Collins- Klementaski (nº 534) and Taruffi (nº 535), plus the 250 GT of Gendebien-Washer.
Finally Tarufi would win the race, with one of the 315 S after the debacle of the Maseratis, and Collins’ withdrawal. However, this model would become sadly famous because Alfonso de Portago and his copilot Edmund G. Nelson lost their lifes, near the finish line, when the front left tyre burst at a speed of more than 155 m.p.h. Nine spectators died in the accident too, leading to the definitive end of the race.
This accident will deprive us of one of the most exciting races ever and one of the best drivers of all time. With this model Slot Classic would like to pay a humble tribute to both. We hope all the fans enjoy it as much as we did creating it.
